Estilos de crianza de padres y madres de niños con discapacidad del Instituto de Parálisis Cerebral del Azuay IPCA

Abstract

The objective of this descriptive investigation is to determine the relationships between parenting styles (permissive, authoritarian, and democratic) of children with disabilities and the sociodemographic variables of the family. The study is quantitative and its variables were measured through the application of the items of the instrument scale of standards and requirements - parents’ version (ENE-P). The sample consisted of 61 people between the ages of 20 and 75 years old, 11 men and 50 women, fathers and mothers who attended the Cerebral Palsy Institute of Azuay IPCA, between September 2019 - January 2020. As a result, it was obtained that, the predominant type of parenting in parents with children with disabilities, is the permissive style with (36.07%), followed by the authoritarian style with (34.43%) and, finally the democratic style with a (29.51%). It can be concluded that, parents with a permissive parenting style have reached only primary studies, they devote a short time to their children and are categorized as an extended family. While authoritarian parents have reached a high school level of education and they devote full time to their children. Finally, democratic parents have reached third level studies, and they provide their children part-time, that is, from 8 to 16 hours. In addition, democratic and authoritarian families belong to a nuclear or traditional family, that is, father, mother and children. In this regard, it is essential to work with families with children with disabilities through family counseling through psychoeducation, in order to have future positive parenting styles to improve the quality of life of all its members.
