Prevalencia y factores asociados a bullying y ciberbullying en adolescentes de la Unidad Educativa Privada Kennedy, Cuenca 2019

Abstract

Background: bullying is a topic of interest that affects a great percent of students around the world and changes alongside with technology presenting new forms of aggression, being cyberbullying one of them. These two forms of harassment provoke harmful effects for the people involved in personal, social and familiar scope. This, in turn carry health and social interactions deterioration. General objective: determine the prevalence and factors associated with bullying and cyberbullying in adolescents of the Kennedy Private Education Unit, Cuenca 2019. Materials and methods: observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. 223 randomly selected adolescents participated. The statistical analysis was carried out through the SPSS 15 program. The results were presented in tables of frequencies, percentages and chi-square, showing prevalence ratio and confidence interval. All necessary bioethical procedures were complied with. Results: The average age was 14.51 years. 52.9% were older than 14 years, 57% are men, 87.4% have urban residence, 58.3% have a high socioeconomic status. 52.9% of adolescents surveyed said they suffered bullying and 43.5% cyberbullying. We found a statistical association between bullying and cyberbullying with age (p: 0.021) (p: 0.003) and family functionality (p: 0.005) (p: 0.001) respectively. Additionally there is a relationship between cyberbullying and education level (p; 0.01).

Conclusions: An association between bullying and cyberbullying was found with the variables: age and family functionality. There is also a relation between cyberbullying and education level.
