Asociación entre anemia materna y bajo peso del recién nacido en Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, julio - diciembre 2018

Abstract

Background: Low Birth weight shows significant prevalence, around 15% of newborns are underweight, there is a considerable amount of research regarding the influence of maternal anemia on the weight of the newborn, depending on the place of study, the results are diverse. General Objective: To determine the association between maternal anemia and low birth weight in Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital, July – December 2018. Methodology: A retrospective, cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with 284 infants and their mother at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital in between July and December 2018. The information was obtained from medical records from these patients and SPSS V19. was used for the data processing, the following statistical measures were used: frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviation, for the association of the variables, Chi square (X2) was used. Results: The predominant age groups was 20/35 years, the average being 24.9 +/- 0.668. The prevalent sex in newborns was female with 57.52%. 6.29% of the mothers had low hemoglobin <11 g/dl and 5.98% presented low hematocrit below 33%. 11.97% of newborns had low birth weight. 7.74% (n=22) of the mothers presented anemia and of them 5.588% (n=2) of their newborns had low birth weight. No significant association was found between maternal anemia and birth weight p = 0.66474499. Conclusions: the study revealed that there is no association between maternal anemia and the presence of low weight in newborns in the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital and will serve as basis for other research on the subject
