Abstract: | Background: The overload syndrome of the elderly caregiver represents a pathology that threatens the health of the caregiver and depends on multiple factors.
General objective: To determine the prevalence of Older-Adult family-caretaker overload syndrome and its relationship with associated factors in the Chordeleg canton, during the year 2017.
Materials and methods: Cross-sectional analytical study with 123 family caretakers belonging to the Chordeleg canton in 2017. For socio-demographic characteristics, the INEC questionnaire was used, for caretaker overload the Zarit test, for the degree of dependence the Katz index and functionality family the FF-SIL. The variables were expressed in percentages and absolute frequencies. The associated factors were evaluated through the Odds Ratio (OR) with confidence interval (95%) and Chi square. Statistically significant results were considered at values of p <0.05.
Results: The bigger proportion of individuals was 40 to 59 years old, the female sex represented 73.17%; in marital status, 73.17% are married; 40.65% had incomplete elementary education and in the relationship with the patient, 47.15% were children. 58.50% of the study population showed overload, being associated with having more than 5 years as a caretaker (RR 1.42 IC95% 1.07-1.88, p = 0.030) and the severe and moderate disability of the patient (RP 2.46, 95% CI 1.74-3.18, p = 0.000)
Conclusion: there was a high prevalence of overload syndrome, associated with having more than 5 years as a caretaker and the moderate-severe disability of the patient. |
