| dc.description | Antecedentes. Las Enfermedades Periodontales son la segunda enfermedad más prevalente en la cavidad oral, pueden causar la pérdida de los órganos dentarios; por otro lado, el tabaquismo es el principal factor de riesgo de las mismas. Objetivo. Determinar la prevalencia de la Enfermedad Periodontal en relación con el tabaquismo en estudiantes de pregrado de la facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Cuenca en el periodo 2018. Materiales y Métodos. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo-analítico transversal. En un total de 305 estudiantes se les realizó un examen clínico para evaluar la prevalencia de Periodontitis según los criterios diagnósticos de Armitage y de Eke, para posteriormente establecer su posible relación, con el tabaquismo y variables demográficas. La asociación entre la Periodontitis y las variables se evaluó mediante la prueba de chi cuadrado (X2) y Odds ratio (OR), valores de p≤ 0,05 fueron considerados significativos. Resultados. La prevalencia de periodontitis con el método diagnóstico de Armitage fue de 17.7% y con el método diagnóstico de Eke fue del 3.3%. El riesgo de desarrollar periodontitis (Armitage) en fué un OR=1.19; IC=0.59-2.38. Mientras que con el método de Eke presentó un OR=0.88; IC=0.18-4.26. Conclusión. La prevalencia de periodontitis en la población de estudio fue baja tanto con el método diagnóstico de Armitage, como con el de Eke, comparado con la prevalencia de periodontitis a nivel mundial (30% según criterios de Armitage). A total of 305 students underwent a clinical examination to evaluate the prevalence of Periodontitis according to the diagnostic criteria of Armitage and Eke, to later establish its possible relationship with smoking and demographic variables.
