Abstract

Background: At present, there is a demographic transition with modification of the population pyramid in all countries, especially in Latin America, due to the decrease in the fertility rate, the progressive aging and the increase in life expectancy; It is necessary that states will be prepared for these changes. General Objective: Identify the family and social support networks and their influence on the lifestyles of the elderly who attend the Cañar Cantonal Health Center 2017. Methodology: Mixed research, qualitative and quantitative; the descriptive, observational and correlational study; the universe formed by 60 older adults, no sample calculation is performed; the quantitative techniques the survey, the qualitative observation; the processing is done in the program SPSS version 22 and Microsoft Excel 2016. In the analysis of the quantitative techniques, the descriptive statistics was used and for the qualitative the dialectic hermeneutics. Ethical procedures such as informed consent were applied. Results: The elderly are between 75 and 85 years old, the female sex predominates with 76.7% in relation to the male, over the national average. Informal social support networks are the most relevant with 81.7%. The main work activity is housework 85%, use of incipient protection means (31.70%); the forms of life are qualified as medium and low (35% and 40%). Conclusions: Support networks influence the way of life, so the quality of life is better when they have social support networks with a value of p <0.05 compared to those that do not; There is a statistical and theoretical association between the variables.
