Abstract:
The rammed earth or rammed earth walls as it is called in Latin America, is a vernacular practice inherited and developed especially in temperate and cold zones. The research begins with the revision of global standards on rammed earth and soil determination suitable for use in the construction of rammed earth walls using ancestral techniques and scientific laboratory tests. The analysis of the mechanical and physical properties of the materials allowed to select a suitable material to elaborate the traditional rammed earth and to compare it with 9 variations that we experimented with the purpose of reducing the weight of the material and to determine the behavior of the same. The results offer a clear comparison between ancestral trials and scientific methods, which allow advance in an innovative proposal to rescue the rammed earth technique with a saving of material, proposing the lightening of the walls with the combination of new materials.
