Prevalencia y factores asociados a accidentes percutáneos en médicos residentes de postgrado de la Universidad de Cuenca. Azuay. 2017

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: to determine the prevalence and associated factors with percutaneous accidents in resident physicians postgraduate of the University of Cuenca.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: this is an analytical, transverse study. A data collection form was applied to 143resident physicians postgraduate who are registered in the University of Cuenca who met the inclusion criteria. The prevalence of percutaneous accidents was reported, as well as a descriptive analysis and prevalence ratio with confidence intervals. The data was collected directly in the health establishments where the resident doctors worked and analyzed with the SPSS program.

RESULTS: The resident physicians presented a prevalence of percutaneous accidents of 44,8%; and of these, 28,7% were in women. The average age was 29,83 years with SD of 2,61; the postgraduate specialty where percutaneous accidents were the most was in Surgery with 16,8%, followed by Gynecology and Obstetrics with 10,5%. 47,8% of resident physicians worked more than 80 hours per week and 64,1% indicated that they did not report the percutaneous accident. A statistically significant relationship was found between percutaneous accidents and sex. No statistically significant relationship was found with postgraduate specialty, weekly work hours, years of experience and previous percutaneous accidents.

CONCLUSIONS: the prevalence of percutaneous accidents in resident physicians was 44,8%. There was a statistically significant relationship between percutaneous accidents and sex with a p = 0,004. OR: 1,18 (CI: 95% 1,09 – 1,28).
