Abstract: | Inflammation can produce harmful effects on the participating tissues, which is why acute phase proteins are used to support routine tests to determine the severity of inflammatory diseases; their response to treatment and in some cases a possible prognosis. Objectives: To determine the blood values of fibrinogen (Fb) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in 69 canines without distinction of race, age or sex, divided into two groups: 39 apparently healthy canines and 30 canines with an inflammatory process of diverse nature, confirmed with leucogram (leukocytosis, neutrophilia and deviation to the left) and clinical evaluation of the patient, to analyze the effect of this inflammatory process on blood Fb and CRP concentrations and its diagnostic value of inflammation. Results: Fb, CRP, segmented neutrophils (SN), and juvenile neutrophils (JN) were statistically higher and the leukocyte count (WBC) was statistically lower in the group with inflammation compared to the control group. The statistical model that related the variables was highly significant (p<0.05) obtaining an overall percentage of diagnostic capacity of inflammation of 87% and individual percentages of 78.3% for CRP and 85.5% for Fb; in addition to a sensitivity and specificity of 66.7% and 87.2% for PCR and 80% and 89.7% for Fb respectively. Conclusion: Fb and CRP concentrations, with a high probability, can act as diagnostic markers of inflammation and should preferably be evaluated together. |
