Abstract

The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of ozone therapy as a treatment for the control of oral cavity bacteria in periodontal disease in dogs that arrived at Orovet veterinary clinic in the Huaquillas canton. For the accomplishment of the objective an investigation of the experimental type was designed. A sample of 30 dogs that arrived at the veterinary Orovet of the city of Huaquillas, who presented signs of periodontal disease prior to a bacteriological examination, were studied. Two groups of 15 dogs each and three measurements at different times of the UFC/mL were organized: the first group received ozone treatment consisting of dental prophylaxis, cleaning with ozonated water and ozonated oil, and the second group received conventional treatment, Which consisted of dental prophylaxis and antiplatelet gel based on chlorhexine and antibiotic (cephalexin 22mg / kg). It was evidenced that there are no significant differences in aerobic behavior, so that the group with conventional treatment obtained an average reduction of 22 (EE 4.27) of bacterial load and the ozone group of 17 (EE 6.68); No significant differences were observed in the reduction of CFU / mL anaerobes, whose final average in the conventional group was 14 (EE 8.875) and the ozone was 0.00 (EE 6.68), as well as No influence of feeding on the reduction of bacteria in the oral cavity was noticed. In that sense, that there are no significant differences between the ozone treatment and conventional, in its effect ozone therapy can be used as another alternative for treatment of oral cavity bacteria control
