La inserción de nueva arquitectura en el paisaje histórico urbano de Cuenca, mediante lineamientos urbano-arquitectónicos. Caso de estudio: El Vado

Abstract

The present research focuses on determining some urban and architectural guidelines for the insertion of new architecture within the context of the Historic Urban Landscape in El Vado-Cuenca. The traditional management of the cities has not been sufficient to face the pressures currently suffered by historical areas around the world; Cuenca has not been the exception to this pressure; it has suffered some degradations and irreparable damages to its traditional architecture. For that reason, it is important to pay attention to some guidelines for the insertion of new architecture which should consider the development of these historical cities but rooted in their own History, memory, and life. Therefore, a few experts based on an analysis of the same international urban-architectural situation as Cuenca, built some guidelines to face this problem: the fragmentation of the elements that once formed an architectonic organism united in and for the city. This fragmentation has affected historical areas in Cuenca, which are vulnerable places and containers of great values. El Vado as a manifestation of the Cuencanidad is considered the right place to develop the present study. This study will delineate the Urban Historic Landscape Unit, in which the material and intangible elements of a cultural heritage are present. Finally, the study of the area of El Vado territorializes (sets up) the different patrimonial values that focus on the insertion of the architecture. These relevant physical factors that the new architecture has to respect, to limit or to potentiate should not be overturned. These aspects are reflected in the urban-architectural guidelines with the objective of granting continuity to Cuenca from its past to the present and to its future.
