Causas y consecuencias del abandono en el adulto mayor del centro gerontológico Cristo Rey, Cuenca-2016

Abstract

Background. - own age changes which are associated with lifestyles, physiological, biological and poor socioeconomic conditions. Elderly care requires time, financial and human resources, it has made families do not take care and choose to leave them in nursing homes; although it must be stressed that their income is sometimes voluntary or indigence, generating sadness, depression and other psychological consequences. Objective General. - identify the causes and consequences of abandonment of the elderly in the Cristo Rey Gerontology Center in the City of Cuenca.2016. Methodology. - An observational, descriptive cross-sectional research was conducted, we worked with a sample of 80 Aging Gerontology Center Cristo Rey who were applied a structured questionnaire with variables: socioeconomic, demographic and biological; activities of daily life and reason for admission. Older adults who participated in the study voluntarily signed informed consent. The tabulation of data was performed in SPSS V. 20 program, and the results are presented in frequency tables and percentages. Results. - The research found that 80 elderly institutionalized, 55% are between 71 to 90 years, 56.3% women, 81.3% have no spouse, 56.3% come from the rural area, 40 % do not receive visits from relatives, 67.5% was institutionalized by family initiative and are considered family relationship between fair to poor. 61.2% low incomes. The variables associated with abandonment are the female gender (OR 2.6, p = 0.037), degree of dependence (OR 5; p = 0.005), regular family relationship or bad (OR 3; p = 0.011), income (OR 4; p = 0.002).
