Abstract:
The main objective of this thesis was to study attention and memory in 8 to 12 year-old children who have been practicing chess continuously for a period of at least 6 months. TOMAL test that measures verbal memory, nonverbal and general memory, and Test D2 that measures attention were used for the study. In both cases the results obtained were compared with the tests scales in order to determine whether chess influenced in the development of these two cognitive skills. Results showed that attention standards were slightly better in the selected population; in verbal memory the results maintained normal levels, while non-verbal memory showed that levels were higher than the average standardized in the scales of TOMAL test, resulting in high levels of general memory on the population practicing chess.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue realizar una investigación de la atención y memoria general en niños de edad comprendida entre los 8 y 12 años, que además practiquen ajedrez de manera continua, y lo hayan hecho por un periodo mínimo de 6 meses.
Para este estudio se aplicó a la población mencionada el test TOMAL el mismo que mide memoria verbal, no verbal y general; además se aplicó el test D2 para medir la atención. En ambos casos se comparó los resultados obtenidos en el estudio con los baremos de las herramientas ya mencionadas, para conocer si el ajedrez tiene influencia en el desarrollo de estas habilidades cognitivas.
El estudio reflejó que los estándares de atención fueron ligeramente mejores en la población seleccionada; en memoria verbal los resultados mantuvieron niveles normales, mientras que en memoria no verbal se observa que los niveles son superiores a la media estandarizada en los baremos del test TOMAL, dando como resultado memoria general de nivel alto en la población que practica ajedrez.
