Evaluación del grado de bienestar animal de los perros en las cuatro áreas de salud del cantón Cuenca, utilizando un test basado en las cinco libertades de los animales

Abstract

ABSTRACT The principal objective of this investigation was to determinate the level of animal welfare in dogs in Cuenca, to make a test based on the five rights of the animals, the authors applied it to 400 dogs and their owners. 102 in Pumapungo area, 99 in Miraflores, 84 in Tomebamba and 115 in Yanuncay. The test had two parts, the first one was addressed to the owners and the second one was to collaborate or deny the first part using the observation of the environment, the behavior and the physical examination of the patient. Every question in the test had a score depending on the answer, the total score of the test helped to categorized animal welfare as “excellent”, “good”, “average” and “bad”. The results were analyzed and are: the animal welfare in Cuenca is “good”, in Pumapungo area is “excellent”, in Miraflores, Tomebamba and Yanuncay is “good”. In the statistic part of the investigation it was determined that there isn´t a relationship between the economic level and the five basic rights of animals.
